26. Gibeah, King Saul’s Capitol

Archaeologists have identified Gibeah with the ancient ruins on a hill known today as Tel el-Ful, about three miles north of Jerusalem.

Description of the Find

Excavations have shown that the site of Gibeah was inhabited about 1100 BC, the time of King Saul. Saul’s fortress-palace was found here. It was small and modest compared with the later palaces of David and Solomon.

Importance of the Find

Gibeah was the principal town of the tribe of Benjamin (Judges 19:11-14). It was also Saul’s home. He eventually made it his capitol (1 Samuel 10:26; 11:4; and 15:34). Finding Gibeah so close to Jebusite Jerusalem indicates that Saul never fully controlled the land.
